Purpose Statement

Endoscopes and endoscopic instruments are complex medical devices that are subject to damage if not properly cared for or maintained. To keep endoscopic instruments in optimum working condition, the user must have a thorough understanding of the structure and function of the instruments.

  • Identify important infection control principles that impact endoscopes and endoscopic instruments
  • Explain the rationale for choosing high-level disinfection or sterilization
  • Review proper care and handling of endoscopes and endoscopic instruments
  • Describe reprocessing guidelines for endoscopes
